Principal's Message

Eryl Smalls, Principal BHMS

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the Blackville Hilda Middle School (BHMS) website. We hope you find this to be a great resource and an informative tool. Please be sure to check the website regularly, as we will be updating information regarding building-wide programs, announcements, bulletins and activities.  As I start my second year as Principal, I am excited about the growth potential that our faculty, staff, students, parents and community members have demonstrated that signify that  BHMS is a school in pursuit of excellence. In our efforts to maintain these high standards of excellence, we rely on the support of parents, students, and the community at large. Excellence is at the forefront of all that we do.  As is expected each year, we must set goals for improvement in student achievement and in our school generally.

At BHMS, we encourage our students to show “STRENGTH IN NUMBERS”. We expect students to arrive to class on time and ready to learn. We expect students to preform at their highest level on all state and district assessments.  We are committed to educating students of varying abilities and backgrounds, and we believe all students can learn and reach high levels of achievement. Thus we strive to create a climate of success for all students and endeavor to provide numerous safety nets as we stretch our students to achieve excellence.

Our focus for this year will be on increasing rigor, relevancy, and literacy across all content areas. With consistency, we as a school can significantly improve overall student achievement. Education is not at all stationary and daily we must endeavor to learn more about our craft and how to better serve students. BHMS will become a Professional Learning Community where student learning, collegial inquiry, and on-going collaboration will become the drive for greater student achievement.

Procedures are being implemented to increase the level of safety at the school. Parents and students are encouraged to cooperate fully by following any new guidelines that improve safety for all, as well as the policies outlined in the handbook that relate to expected behaviors. Blackville Hilda  Middle has a closed campus and students are expected to remain on the campus for the duration of the school day. There will be no tolerance for classroom disruption, fighting, obscene language, vulgar or disrespectful conduct. Our school will be a safe place for learning where students achieve success and plan for meaningful careers.

I pledge my wholehearted support to improving student achievement at BHMS and I ask for the cooperation of all staff, students, parents and the wider community. Please do not hesitate to contact me at (803)-284-5900, or by email at eryl.smalls@barnwell19.net or simply a school visit with any concerns or for further information about our school.

Sincerely,

Eryl M. Smalls

Principal
